Founded in 1984, the Tri-State Budgerigar Society (TSBS) is dedicated to the keeping,
care, breeding, and exhibition of budgerigars (budgies or parakeets). Based in Central
New Jersey, USA, the club is affiliated with the
Budgerigar Association of America (BAA)
and hosts an annual sanctioned show in the Central Jersey area.
Our mission is to promote the hobby of keeping budgerigars while sharing knowledge about
proper housing, nutrition, exhibition, breeding to the highest standards of excellence,
and raising tame, healthy, and well-socialized companion birds. Although the primary focus
of the club is the breeding and exhibition of quality exhibition-type (English)
budgerigars, we also provide guidance and support for those who keep pet budgies or common
parakeets (American).
In addition to our annual show, TSBS hosts regular meetings
that focus on education, fellowship, and the exchange of knowledge among bird enthusiasts.
Meetings are typically held on the third or fourth Saturday or Sunday of the month at
2:00 p.m. at various locations throughout Central New Jersey, including Saddle River,
Trenton, Franklin Park, Matawan, Marlboro, Manalapan, Waldwick, and Spotswood.
Each meeting features a planned presentation, guest speaker, educational topic, or
occasional field trip. Members also enjoy informal discussions about birds, refreshments,
and the opportunity to meet fellow budgerigar enthusiasts. Throughout the year, the club
also hosts an annual picnic, a winter holiday dinner, and its annual sanctioned show.
On August 15–16, 2026, the Tri-State Budgerigar Society will proudly host the
35th Annual Budgerigar
Association of America Show, a BAA-sponsored event.
Competition divisions include Pet, Pairs, Rare, Junior, Novice, Intermediate, Champion,
and Best in Show. The event will be held at
645 Cranbury Road (Route 535), East Brunswick, NJ 08816.
Everyone with an interest in budgerigars—whether you are a beginner, pet owner, breeder,
or experienced exhibitor—is welcome to attend our meetings and club events.
Membership offers the opportunity to exhibit birds in
competitive shows, although showing is never a requirement. Whether your interest lies in
breeding, exhibiting, or simply providing the best care for your pet budgies, TSBS provides
a welcoming environment where members can learn, share experiences, and build lasting
friendships with fellow bird enthusiasts.
